The sacrifice of the International Brigaders and their Spanish comrades, in the fight against fascism, is beautifully illustrated by the story of the lives of John Cornford and Julian Bell in this book. It also illustrates the political awareness, and selflessness, of the British population at that time - across the social classes. How sad that their aspirations were not met by the appeasement of Chamberlyne and his Hitler admiring cronies in the UK and USA, and the inevitability of WW2 followed. Sadly, there are still so many lessons to be learned from this book about the cost of ignoring the poison of fascism. One only has to witness the slow rise of the BNP in UK, the viscious attempts to rewrite history in Poland, Czech Republic, and the Baltic States to appreciate that it could easily happen all over again.
