I simply stumbled onto the profound writing that is Edwin Way Teale. He was a modern day Henry Thoreau and John Muir, with a dash of Henry Beston and maybe even a small portion of Jack Kerouac thrown in for experienced measure. His 'Season' series is a wonderful read. This book is, of course, the second in the line of spring to summer, fall and winter. It, like the others, is a peaceful read, an enjoyment and an opportunity to become educated in the field of birds, insects, trees, flowers, and animals of all sorts. He traveled with his wife Nellie and recorded everything that moved him and as such passes the charm of his views and definitions to the open-minded reader. A book to be placed by the bedside and gathered up each evening before falling off to sleep. One is taken along with Mr. Teale on a sunny path or a moonlit amble or a steep climb up a grassy hill while the rain clouds approach. His mastery of explaining nature and the telling of his American journal word for word is, to my thinking, a prosaic experience bordering on genius. Do yourself a favor and purchase this man's books. It is a bit of Zen as well. A delightful expression of nature.
