This is the first in Dumas' series on Marie Antoinette, and starts as she is entering France.
Good descriptions of life (both of the Court and of others) at that period, which helps with understanding the deterioration that led to the fall of the Monarchy.
I initially tried starting the Marie Antoinette series a few books later, but starting with Joseph Balsamo provides necessary introductions of characters that continue in the following books.
