Spine is worn with shallow chipping, label is browned and nicked, top edge is foxed and spotted, an about very good copy. Inscribed by Pierce to critic Henry Seidel Canby with an eight line poem on front flyleaf: "To Henry S. Canby: To that stern friend who bode us prune and pare / We bring the fruit our judgment bode us spare, / Remembering well what long experience saith, / That whom the critic loves he chasteneth. Frederick E. Pierce." A lengthy, narrative poem, in two parts and a prelude.
