Seller's Description:
Color Plates. Fine. John Marin was an early Modernist artist. He is best remembered as one of the first Americans dedicated to making abstract paintings, and is thus credited as a major influence on the later Abstract Expressionist movement. He was closely associated with the photographer Alfred Stieglitz, who mounted Marin's first solo show in 1909, and Stieglitz's artistic and financial support were invaluable to Marin over the course of the following four decades. Born on December 23, 1870 in Rutherford, NJ, Marin's mother died just nine days after his birth. He graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1901 and traveled to Europe, where he developed his signature watercolor technique of abstraction. Marin died on October 1, 1953 in Addison, Maine. In 2007, The White House acquired his 1952 painting The Circus No. 1, and his work is held in institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum, and the Art Institute of Chicago.
