Pianist Andrew Rangell can't be accused of rushing his recording of Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Book II; His Book I appeared in 2007, and the present release not until 2022. Despite the gap, the stylistic issues are similar, and Rangell's second volume will likely engender controversies similar to those that attended the earlier release. Some find Rangell a genius in Bach; others would evaluate him as a crank, but perhaps a more balanced description is possible. Rangell's is a highly pianistic Bach, and what is interesting is that he accomplishes this without using a great deal of pedal. Instead, he relies on variety of attack, articulation, and tempo. Rangell introduces tempo rubato into antecedent-consequent phrase pairs and even into fugue subjects. For some, this will all be a bridge too far; for others, Rangell will bring out the blooming variety in this highly systematic music.
