Many performances of Johann Christian Bach's music, particularly Neville Marriner's with the Academy of St. Martin-in-the-Fields in the 1970s and outings such as those by Les Violons du Roy, have been decent performances, but they always seem to be missing something. In this case, the Akademie für Alte Musik Berlin has really taken a hard look at Johann Christian Bach's scores, which, after all, look simple, but aren't, and have extracted what they really say. The pieces, particularly the criminally neglected "Silver-Haired Laddie" Concerto in B major Op. 13/4, could not have been more carefully chosen, although one could've hoped for Johann...
