Jettons or jettons are tokens or coin-like medals produced across Europe from the 13h through the 18th centuries. They were produced as counters for use in calculation on a counting board, a line board similar to an abacus. They also found use as a money substitute in games, similar to modern casino chips or poker chips. A hard to find out of print classic by Robert Werlich, a world renowned connoisseur of Russian decorations and preeminent authority in the field of medal collecting. The subject of this book are Russian jettons (jetons), a sort of commemorative tokens in a form of a badge that were to be worn on a watch fob, attached to a cigarette case, or simply kept as a memento. Many Russian jettons were made in hallmarked gold and silver, often boasted high quality enamelwork, and occasionally consisted of many overlaying parts. Some were made by top Russian jewelers including those of the famous Faberge firm. When this book came out in 1985, it was the first catalog of its kind. Not only it identified literally hundreds of beautiful Russian jettons hitherto unknown to most collectors in the western world, but also provided English translation of the inscriptions and in some cases, brief historical background, e.g. history of the military unit or organization that issued the jetton. This catalog remains a great source of information for the English speaking collectors.
