Not illustrated. 1872 Excerpt: ... the latter's animadversion of him are omitted, they are both inserted in the second GospelJ, which Papias, who wrote about the beginning of the second century, says he was informed by the presbyter John was written by Mark, 'who, being Peter's interpreter, wrote with great accuracy whatever that Apostle remembered', and who, if duty required him to record what was so much to his employer's discredit, would surely not have left untold what was so decidedly to his honour and glory. It has already been remarked how our Lord, in speaking of his Church being built on a rock, again readily availed himself of a builder's simile; but of course it is to be understood that it is not a material church or edifice that was so spoken of, but the 'EncXqata--the assembly or congregation of the elect or called; like as ' the household of God' is declared by Paul to be 'built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Jesus the Messiah himself being the chief corner stone'. In the fourth Gospel, as might be expected, the whole incident takes an entirely different form. As John the Baptist is therein said to have from the commencement proclaimed Jesus to be 'the Lamb of God, ' and Andrew to have announced him as the Messiah to his brother Simon Peter %, there was no necessity, or indeed opportunity, for the latter to make any express declaration to that effect. But after some mystical sayings on the part of Mark TMi. 29. t Luke ix. 20. J Mark viii. 32,33. Euseb. 'Eccl. Hist.' iii. 39. Eph. ii. 20. 1 John i. 29, 41. Jesus with reference to his own divine nature, it is stated that 'From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away?
