La Description du Tableau cosmique de Jean de Gaza est une ekphrasis en vers (703 hexametres de style nonnien et 29 trimetres iambiques repartis en deux prologues) composee vers le debut du VIe siecle de notre ere. Elle appartient au milieu culturel de l'Ecole de Gaza dont Jean est le plus eminent representant poetique. D'autres membres de ce groupe d'auteurs pratiquant en milieu chretien une rhetorique classicisante ont recemment ete publies (Procope de Gaza, ed. Amato et alii , 2014) ou sont actuellement en cours de publication dans la C. U. F. (Chorikios). Le poeme decrit dans les moindres details une oeuvre d'art perdue pour nous dont le souvenir s'est cependant conserve grace a lui. Cette cosmographie representant l'univers sous une forme allegorique rassemblait une soixantaine de personnifications (parmi lesquelles l'Ocean, la Terre, la Mer, les Vents, les Heures, Aion, le Soleil etc ...). Elle etait l'un des ornements des bains d'hiver de la ville de Gaza. Jean de Gaza reussit ainsi la delicate mission d'interpreter cette iconographie de facture classique dans une perspective qui mele les influences chretiennes et neoplatoniciennes. La presente edition critique est fondee sur l'examen du manuscrit principal qui n'est autre que la seconde partie du codex de l' Anthologie palatine (Paris. Suppl. gr. 384). La traduction est la premiere jamais proposee dans une langue contemporaine (on compte par ailleurs une traduction latine due a Frederic Morel en 1619 et une paraphrase en allemand par Paul Friedlander dans son edition de 1912). Une introduction, des notes de commentaire et un lexique completent l'ouvrage, ainsi qu'une liste des passages des Dionysiaques cites par Jean de Gaza et une liste des ouvrages cites. Delphine Lauritzen est ancienne eleve de l'Ecole Normale Superieure (Ulm), agregee en Lettres classiques et docteur en Etudes grecques. Elle a publie a ce jour une quinzaine d'articles dans le domaine de la poesie et de l'art de l'Antiquite tardive et a codirige deux ouvrages collectifs, en collaboration avec Michel Tardieu, Le voyage des legendes.
