This has sometimes been attributed to the plot, which requires knowledge of fifteenth century history and the Hussite Wars to make much sense. (The plot centers on a small-minded bourgeois landlord in nineteenth century Prague, who, in extended dream sequences, travels first to the moon, and then 468 years back in time.) Some critics consider the music of the second act to fall below Janácek's usual level of inspiration.
