Edward Lannion, the young master of Hatting Hall, is about to marry Marian Fox. At Penndean, a nearby house, preparations are under way for the wedding, overseen by the anxious Benet. Family and friends gather together for a celebratory dinner on the eve of the ceremony. The night is warm and clear, and after dinner the guests walk in the grounds and under the stars, full of happy anticipation. But then there is a sudden and extraordinary event, which changes everything. Iris Murdoch's novel is a marvellous and compelling human comedy. Edward and Marian, the couple at the centre of the story, are led by events to learn the truth about themselves; in the process, their friends, and lovers, are forced to make new choices, and see things as they are. And watching over all of them is Jackson, Benet's servant, a dark, mysterious and dangerous presence. It is Jackson who must intervene in the story to set the two young lovers onto the right path.

Seller's Description:
None. Very Good Indeed in Very Good Indeed jacket. A First Edition of Murdoch's novel 'Jackson's Dilemma'. 'Jackson's Dilemma' is the last novel written by prolific author, Iris Murdoch. Set on the eve of a wedding, the characters are watched over by Jackson, the man servant, who himself, as the title suggests, must make an agonizing decision. This novel is one of particular interest, as it was written by Murdoch whilst she was suffering from the early stages of Alzheimer's. This novel has since been used by researchers to study the effects of the disease on a person vocabulary. Researchers have noted that linguistically this novel is more akin to Murdoch's earlier works, suggesting a loss of word fluency. Hence, why this particular work is one of great interest. Iris Murdoch was a British novelist and philosopher, born in Ireland. Primarily her novels focus on themes of morality, spirituality and sexuality. A prominent philosopher, she is now increasingly accredited for her work in the field of philosophy, most notably her work on the reinterpretation of Aristotle and Plato, as well as her discussions of moral philosophy. In her lifetime Murdoch wrote 26 novels, as well of a series of short stories and several philosophical papers. In original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with a small about of bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Slight bumping to the extremities. Dustwrapper is smart, with minor bumping to the head and tail to the spine. Slight bumping to the extremities. There is a small tidemark, internally to the wrap, at the head of the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Very Good Indeed.
