After exile, he earned his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University. He worked for Esso Research and Engineering and later spent 18 years in academia as Full Professor and Director of Chemical Engineering at the Universities of Puerto Rico and Detroit, and as a consultant and researcher at NASA's Johnson Space Center. In 1986, he founded a consulting firm aimed at improving workplace environments and optimizing processes to simultaneously increase productivity and quality. Under his leadership, the Systema Group served Fortune 100 companies and various governmental organizations across the U.S., Europe, Central and South America. As Systema's president, Chao authored more than 30 books on management, politics, science, and Cuban history, as well as numerous articles in newspapers and academic journals.
