It Must Be the Heat: French Caribbean is the kickoff volume in an eponymously named series by Mercury Records to showcase the different sounds, rhythms, and styles of music in the French Caribbean in the current era. Yeah, this is what passes for pop and club music in Martinique, Haiti, and Guadeloupe for starters. This is true island music that comes from the grit and sweat of the working musicians of the region. And it is solid form top to bottom. This is one of those samplers with no weak tracks regardless of genre. So zouk, dancehall, compas, and other forms are engaged widely and sometimes crisscross in these unique and engaging cuts. Beginning with the crunching speed-driven dancehall zouk of "Peyi'n Nwen Vin Ranje" by Kiko, things are off to a roiling boil. The more soulful "Mr. Merchant" by Jean-Marc Schomberg is an utterly beautiful electrified compas tune, and the soulful, backbeat-driven "24 Heures" by FED could have been done by Milton Nascimento with Toots Hibbert. This is one to snag before the series catches on, because it will. ~ Thom Jurek, Rovi
