The present volume is the result of four years' additional thought and research on the lines laid down in my Geographical Distribution of Animals, and may be considered as a popular supplement to and completion of that work. It is, however, at the same time a complete work in itself: and, from the mode of treatment adopted, it will, I hope, be well calculated to bring before the intelligent reader the wide scope and varied interest of this branch of natural history. Although some of the earlier chapters deal with the same questions as my former volumes, they are here treated from a different point of view; and as the discussion of them is more elementary and at the same time tolerably full, it is hoped that they will prove both instructive and interesting. The plan of my larger work required that genera only should be taken account of; in the present volume I often discuss the distribution of species, and this will help to render the work more intelligible to the unscientific reader.

Seller's Description:
Not Stated. Very Good Indeed. A smartly bound, first edition copy of this geological work regarding climates, and insular faunas and floras. Written by the important naturalist, explorer, and biologist Alfred Russel Wallace. Smartly bound, in a half morocco binding and cloth covered boards.  Bound without half-titles and advertisement leaf.  Alfred Russel Wallace was a British naturalist, explorer, geographer and botanist. He independently conceived the theory of evolution through natural selection. His paper was jointly published with some of Charles Darwin's writings in 1858 which prompted Darwin to publish 'On the Origin of Species'.  This work is a sequel to Wallace's 'The Geographic Distribution of Animals'. To the first part there are chapters on the elementary facts of distribution, evolution as a key to distribution, the powers of dispersal of animals and plants, changes of climate which have influenced the dispersal of organisms, and ancient glacial epochs, and milt climates in the arctic regions. To the second part there are chapters on insular faunas and floras in the Oceanic Islands, the Galapagos, St Helena, Borneo and Java, as well as Japan and Formosa.  With the small institutional stamps of St Martin in the Fields to several pages and to the front and rear of all map plates.  Bookplate to the front pastedown, 'City of Westminster Public Libraries'.  Illustrated, with a map frontispiece, two plates and twenty-three in-text illustrations.  Collated, complete. In a half morocco binding, with cloth covered boards. Externally, very smart. Joints and extremities are rubbed. Small score mark to the front board. Bookplate to the front pastedown, City of Westminster Public Library. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright. Occasional institutional stamps throughout, to the margins of pages and to the front and rear of all plates. Just the odd spot to pages. Very Good Indeed.
