In the journals covering his visit to Cuba that take up the majority of this book, you witness Allen's naive but sincere attempts to speak up for the gay kids and poets who lived in Havana's underground, spending nights in jail and enduring censorship. Allen is thrown out of Cuba and his Czech journals are simply cut off after only a few pages, the majority of the pages stolen from his hotel room by Czech police. However, in the Russian journals you see him, wiser to the treacheries of the Soviet system, trading days and nights of harassment for loneliness but managing to meet leading dissident Russian poets and writers including Yevtushenko and Voznesensky. The journals that followed these, from which he drew The Fall of America: Poems 1965-1974, were published in November of 2020.
