They persuaded themselves that the only way to ensure the future security and prosperity of their community was both to suppress the Catholic majority and to establish some form of institutionalized protect against perceived misguided interference in their affairs by the English government. They set about doing so by transforming the existing Irish parliament from an infrequently summoned and ineffective legislative body into an exclusively Protestant assembly with regularly scheduled sessions."
