Irish Fairy Tales William Butler Yeats Born and educated in Dublin, Ireland, William Butler Yeats discovered early in his literary career a fascination with Irish folklore and the occult. Later awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923, Yeats produced a vast collection of stories, songs, and poetry of Ireland's historical and legendary past. These writings helped secure for Yeats recognition as a leading proponent of Irish nationalism and Irish cultural independence. Originally published in two separate books near the end of the nineteenth century, "Irish Fairy and Folk Tales" have preserved a rich and charming heritage in an authentic Irish voice. In this volume, extraordinary characters of Irish myth are brought to life through the brilliant poetic voice of W. B. Yeats. These legendary stories of capricious Trooping Fairies, the frightful Banshee, Kings and Queens, Giants, Devils and the ever popular Leprechaun will delight and entertain readers of all ages. Seller's Description:
Jack B. Yeats. Very Good. No Jacket. 16mo-over 5¾"-6¾" tall. This is a Very Good copy of the First American Edition of Yeats's third book [Wade, 217], edited by him, with an introduction and an afterword regarding authorities. He has "'''included no story that has already appeared" in his previous book of tales from the Irish peasantry. Includes an unpublished story by Douglas Hyde. Illustrated by his brother Jack B. Yeats. Rare. Less common than the English edition from Unwin (it was printed from the English sheets and with the same binding). Decorative cloth binding of cream and green that Wade calls "pinafore" repeated on the endpapers and the edges of the pages. Clean text; 236 pages. Mildly bumped; spine a bit faded but completely readable. Previous-owner name on the Title Page. Without a few spots on the front panel and spine, the book would be graded much higher; as it is, they detract little from this scarce volume. Quercus observes the major defect to be a blacked-out name on the reverse of the FFEP, with a bit of bleed-through. In an archival plastic protector.
