Excerpt from Investigation Into "Louping-Ill" Or "Trembling" Leaping-ill. A clinical entity corresponding to this mean ing Of the word, and occurring in its purest form among hoggs and Older Sheep, in reality exists as a cause Of great loss among sheep stocks, and is well recognised by shepherds. In this form Of disease a Sheep, on being given a sudden fright, as by a dog suddenly appearing, may jump in the air, fall down, and after some little kicking expire; or, after having so jumped and fallen down, may lie kicking for a considerable time, and eventually rise up and stagger away. This latter method of procedure may be repeated several times, the animal eventually in some cases possibly dying in one of the seizures. At other times the animal, having fallen down in one of these seizures, fails to get up and remains lying, and is found on examination to be in a more or less paralysed condition. In this condition it may die in a short time, or may remain paralysed for weeks or months, sometimes recovering entirely, but usually exhibit ing some residual paralysis.
