Paddle-wheels began to help sails and sailors, just when sailing ships had reached perfection; but the screw has now superseded the paddle-wheel, and, in our most powerful men-of-war, has almost annihilated sails. There seems to be no limit to man's courage, and ambitious desire, in regard to the speed and the size of ships.
