Die Intensivhaltung von Nutztieren ist erst m???glich geworden, nachdem sich Technik und Industrie auch der Tierproduktion angenommen hatten. Dabei stan- den auch hier die Rationalisierung der Tierhaltung und betriebswirtschaftli- ehe Ueberlegungen im Vordergrund. Die Bed???rfnisse der Tiere wurden nur soweit ber???cksichtigt, als es die Erhaltung ihrer Leistungsf???higkeit erforderte. Mit diesem Ziel entwickelte Haltungssysteme m???gen technisch perfektioniert und arbeitssparend sein; die durch sie geschaffene extrem eint???nige, k???nstliche Umwelt verunm???glicht es den Tieren jedoch weitgehend, ihre artgem???ssen, nat???r- lichen Verhaltensweisen auszuleben. Da viele Bed???rfnisse der Tiere nicht be- friedigt sind, kommt es in solchen Haltungssystemen h???ufig zu Verhaltensst???- rungen. In den letzten Jahren ist sowohl aus wissenschaftlichen Kreisen, wie auch von der Oeffentlichkeit, immer lauter Kritik an dieser Entwicklung geiibt worden.
