This volume considers the complex roles of larger institutions as spurs, supports, and foils for socially engaged practice in Chicago. The flourishing of this art, here, might be attributed in part to an image or story of the city that is projected internally by/to the creative community based here and out far beyond the city s boundaries. Although multi-faceted and contested, this story provides a kind of ballast for cultural producers who chose to base their practices here, and also attracts others interested in pursuing similar ways of working, thinking, and living. This volume focuses on how artists and others have worked with, within, and sometimes in opposition to large institutions like the public schools, universities, libraries, archives, museums, and other civic bodies. It considers both visible and guerrilla methods that have helped to sustain and disseminate a rigorous critical conversation over generations and across communities. It grounds recent history within a longer arc of civic self-fashioning, touching on precedents including forms of display from the Columbian Exposition of 1893 to Jane Addams Hull-House; John Dewey's legacy in arts education; and the stories told about the city by the Chicago School of urban sociology.
