Gerald Murnane was born in Melbourne in 1939. From 1960 to 1973, he worked as a teacher and developed educational publications. He published his first novel in 1974. In 1980, he became a lecturer, whilst continuing to write. Gerald won the FAW Barbara Ramsden Award for Velvet Waters in 1991. He received the Patrick White Literary Award in 1999. He currently lives in Melbourne.
