In the latter part of the fifteenth century the Inka Empire was forming in the Andes Mountains of South America. By the time of the European invasion in A. D. 1532, the Inka state covered a territory over 5,000 km. long from the present-day Colombian-Ecuadorian border to a point south of Santiago, Chile.
