In response to imperialist expansion, growth of cosmopolitan influences, and missionary evangelism, and against the backdrop of state fiscal crisis and natural disasters, local organizations began to emerge in Shandong. Boxers across North China attacked mission compounds and killed missionaries and Chinese Christians.
