Excerpt from Index of Wills, Etc., From the Dean and Chapter's Court at York, A. D. 1321 to 1636: With Appendix of Original Wills, A. D. 1524 to 1724 Volume I. Covers the years 1321 to 1492; Vol. II., 1493 to 1543; Vol. III., 1543 to 1551; Vol. IV., 1545 to 1553. The Act Book contains the usual information, practically from 1559 to 1636, and is therefore contemporaneous with a Volume of Transcripts belonging to the same Courts, but now lodged in the District Registry at York. This Volume contains also a few Wills dated 1637 and 1638, but mostly without the date of probate. For the convenience of searchers it has been numbered Volume V., the Compiler being responsible for the numbering. In the District Registry there are also a large number of Original Wills, Administration and Tuition Bonds and Inventories belonging to the same Courts, and extending over the years 1524 to 1724. An Index to these (inventories excepted) copied from the Official Index, is given as an appendix to this Volume. For further information regarding the later Wills of these Courts see Dr. Marshall's Volume of Ancient Courts Probate. The Society owes a debt of gratitude for the possession of this Volume to the late Canon Raine. It was he who proposed that the Compiler should index these Registers and gave him the necessary facilities for doing so, hoping that the Index would appear in print at the earliest possible date. Unfortunately it is to be regretted that he passed away long before this could be accomplished. He often expressed regret that the Surtees Society had not published the earliest Volume of this Series entire, which he considered contained a most valuable and interesting collection of Wills.
