But there are some disturbing details in his own poetry, together with occasional remarks made by other ancient writers, that have always cast a long shadow of doubt over the standard view of him as a purely rational thinker. Then, in the 1950s, a series of inscriptions was unearthed at Parmenides' hometown in southern Italy which has thrown a totally new light on the nature and purpose of his philosophy. This book brings the key evidence together and presents a new picture of him as priest, initiate and healer. --with a bonus offer--

Rereading the poem of Parmenides and decyphering some recent archeological findings, P. Kingsley exort us to forget usual erudit and academic views about the birth and purpose of philosophy. The «love of wisdom» that Pythagoreans talked about and practised became later, in our Western culture, talking, arguing and debating about «wisdom», an exercise far from the original exercises on incubation and other adventurous ways of altering normal counsciousness, in order to approach and learn with the gods.
The «lawgivers» and«healers» of that kind of philosophy are the characters Kingsley describes and tries to picture before your surprised eyes.
I am looking now for his other books, to see the follow-up...
