"They have started through the woods and it's my opinion they won't stop before they have joined their friends in the north, probably the Tiogas." "Perhaps they haven't taken Jenkins and Dana very far," suggested one of the company significantly. "I think they have," responded the first speaker, "If they had wanted their scalps they would not have kept the men here. No, 'twas prisoners they were after this time, and from present appearances 'twould seem that they have not waited in vain. It seems strange, though, that Jenkins should have fallen into such a trap as that." "Even the best of men sometimes make mistakes," said one. "Let us go out and see for ourselves." His suggestion was at once acted upon and the men all went forth from the house to examine the marks upon the snow of which the man had spoken. It was not long, however, before all re-entered the house and a hasty consultation then took place. That the Indians had been there and in considerable numbers no one could doubt, and the strange part of it all was that they evidently had been at no pains to conceal their presence or to hide their footprints when they had departed from the place. In all probability too, they had taken the two prisoners with them, for no evidences of bloodshed or of a struggle could be found, and it was not considered likely that from such a force of men they could have escaped.
