Seller's Description:
Very Good. Trade PB. 4to. Published by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. 1996. 250 pgs. Wrappers lightly worn with some light shelf-wear to the extremities present. Book is free of ownership marks. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. Published in conjunction with an exhibition organized by the National Gallery of Art, Washington, in association with the Brooklyn Museum and the Saint Louis Art Museum. In the 1850s and 1860s, painting landscapes in oils directly from nature moved from the margins of artistic activity to become a central creed and practice for radical young European painters; but the subject of this exhibition and catalog is the open-air work done earlier, by painters active between 1780 and 1840, when such paintings were considered merely part of the working process. Five essays precede presentation of the works, each of which is thoroughly captioned. EB; 8vo 8"-9" tall; 0 pages.

New. 0894682245. *** FREE UPGRADE to Courier/Priority Shipping Upon Request *** – – *** IN STOCK AND IMMEDIATELY AVAILABLE FOR SHIPMENT-FLAWLESS COPY, BRAND NEW, PRISTINE, NEVER OPENED-Book Description: "Artists who pioneered open-air landscape painting between 1780 and 1840 came to Italy from all over Europe to respond directly to the beauty of landscape for the first time. With a rich selection of representative paintings from these outdoor artists, this beautiful book traces the work of the earliest members of the school, Pierre-Henri de Valenciennes and Thomas Jones, to the culminating paintings of Corot."--with a bonus offer--
This is the definitive work on the early open-air painters in Europe. There are painters included that are very important, yet I've never seen their work in print before. Corot is given a few pages of his own, but if you're looking for a monograph on his work from this period, find a copy of Galassi's Corot in Italy.
