In 1933, President Roosevelt personally selected William E. Dodd to be the United States ambassador to Nazi Germany. Dodd took his family with him, including his daughter Martha. Initially enamored with the Nazi party and its passion, Martha supported the Third Reich. However, when Hitler's violent policies became apparent, Martha changed her opinion and watched in horror. Here, author Erik Larson offers a chilling first-person account of Germany's transformation under Hitler's rule.

An Entertaining Look Behind the Scenes
Life in the pre-World War II, 1930s American embassy in Germany is revealed, The book gives a close-up view of William Dodd and his family as they arrive, settle in, and finally leave Germany. The family's struggle to understand what was happening around them as Hitler consolidated his power is compellingly written. Like other evil geniuses, Hitler was a master at deception and manipulation -- fooling the Dodd's was child's play. There are lessons to be learned from this insightful book.

Great Book-Great Condition
This book came just as advertised,it was in absolute perfect condition-brand new. It is also a a marvelous read about the experiences of the newly appointed American ambassador to Hitler's New Germany beginning in 1933. His name was William Dodd, a simple, decent, and honest man. Perhaps he was too decent for the job of ambassador, or maybe he was just what the job needed....Maurice H Bank

In the Garden of the Beast
Every time I think there's nothing left to learn about the holocaust more relevant information shows up. Well written and absorbing. If only it were a work of fiction.
