I was given a copy of this book to read and review. Since I'm a published writer myself, I tend to be highly critical. I don't pull punches when I review something. But this time, I have no problem ladling out praise. This book was so good, it essentially held me prisoner until I finished.
Orphaned heiress Louisa Stratten escaped her strict guardian to tour Europe, and created a fictitious husband to convince her family she was safe. Now she must return home to England and deal with financial matters, so she hires down-and-out Boer War veteran Charles Cooper to play the role of perfect husband "Maximillian." But someone wants "Max" dead...and Louisa finds herself unable to resist her new employee's rough charms, despite her emotional scars from a previous scandalous affair.
Usually, I figure out a plot long before it plays out on the page. Maggie Robinson kept me on the edge of my seat until I finished. Few writers enthrall me so much that I can't put a book down, but I HAD to continue reading until the end, even though it took me until 4 a.m.--and I needed to get up early for an appointment!
In this age of self-publishing, too many books are poorly written. "In the Arms of the Heiress" was wonderfully constructed. The characters were vivid, and so realistic I felt I knew them personally. Despite Louisa's elevated life style, I related to her--and I fell madly in love with Charles! Even the secondary characters were well-drawn and human. I haven't read a romance I enjoyed so much in a very long time.
Warning: If you prefer 'sweet' romance, the love scenes may be a bit graphic for your taste, though this isn't an erotic romance, either. It's more a 'sexy' romance, with some hot love scenes that don't leave the reader waiting outside the bedroom door. For myself, it was the perfect balance: not too hot and not too cold. Since some readers aren't comfortable with so much detail, it seemed prudent to mention this.
Usually, I won?t give five stars because so many authors ask friends and relatives to give perfect reviews in order to artificially inflate their rating. I'm making an exception in this case because "In the Arms of the Heiress" is just that good. I've never read a book by this author before, but now I intend to obtain every book she's ever written and read them all.
