This unexpected act of discretion on the part of the two ecclesiastics secured to the Baron de Miraumont an untroubled end, that 'gentle wafting to immortal life, ' which was then the lot of so few among his coreligionists. Of course burial with Protestant rites was denied to his remains, and it was probably only owing to the absence of d'Herapine at the time that his interment was not preceded by the same indignity which had been recently adjudged to the body of the Protestant Paul Chevenix, Senior Counsellor of the Parliament of Metz.1 This distinguished man, who had been for fiftythree years seated on the Fleur-de-lys, was eighty years old when he died. In spite of even episcopal entreaties, he refused to receive the sacraments of the Church of Rome. Consequently it was decreed that--in compliance with the edict--his corpse should be drawn through the public streets on a hurdle; and, in spite of the interference of the parliament of which he had been so great an ornament, the sentence was carried out in all its barbarous rigour. A still more shameful application of this monstrous edict, alluded to by the celebrated Protestant minister Jurien, was that of a high-born lady, the Demoiselle de Montalambert, whose naked corpse was drawn on a hurdle through the streets of Angouleme, without regard to her sex, age, or condition. 1 The expression ' Parliament' is not to be taken in our English sense.
