It is the story of Linnet's( The linnet bird) grand daughter who is born in India and raised by British missionaries. Life in India during the Raj is vividly depicted and class and race distinctions are palpable. I especially liked the explanation about how children should be raised with love so that they might know what love is and be able to love in their turn. It is a book about love( for parents, people one grows up with, offspring, people in need, people who are destitute or ill) It is also a book about what lack of love can do to people. I liked it.
