In 1942 65 women-members of the Australian Army Nursing Service-were evacuated from Singapore to escape captivity by the Japanese. Of these 24 survived bombing, shipwreck, drowning, shooting, sickness, and captivity in Sumatra to return to Australia 3 1/2 years later. The author was one of those women.
