Paris 1874, Boulevard des Capucines: a group of artists that were to radically change the rules of the Art world, Claude Monet, Alfred Sisley, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Camille Pissarro, Paul Cezanne, Edgar Degas and Frederic Bazille, mounted an exhibition in the studio of photographer Felix Nadar. The show took place in a private venue because the official exhibition site - the salon - had turned away most of the works that these artists had put forward. The paintings represented a new language, in terms of both technique and content, and revealed a new way to perceive reality. The exhibition proved to be a veritable scandal that filled official critics with indignation and they somewhat contemptuously labeled the paintings as "impressionist" because they were deemed unfinished sketches that had been badly constructed and were ambiguous. Work by the following artists is also exhibited in this volume: Gustave Caillebotte, Mary Cassett, Paul Gauguin, Edouard Manet, Berthe Morisot, George Seurat, Paul Signac, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and Vincent van Gogh.
