Seller's Description:
VG-. Obvious shelf wear on covers, rubbing along spine. Brown and color-illustrated wraps. 266 pp. 46 color, 220 bw repros. Essay by John Wilmerding. Very well documented writings on Peto and other still-life painters. Of the 227 works listed and illustrated, 61 were included in the exhibition. An important study, and hard to find. Published to accompany the exhibition held in Washington, DC: National Gallery of Art, Jan. 19 to May 29, 1983, one other location.
The U.S. has a little known still-life tradition, and one of the greatest artists in this tradition was John F. Peto. His images strikingly anticipate many modern artists--Kurt Schwitters, Mondrian, Robert Rauschenberg, and various pop artists. His letter board paintings in particular are very intriguing, and manage to be psychologically profound (something that one doesn't expect from a still life). This book does an amazing job of reconstructing Peto's life and demonstrating the great value of his artwork.
