This is a collection of fantasy short stories, edited by Robin McKinley. Authors include James P. Blaylock, Patricia A. McKillip, Robert Westall, Peter Dickinson, Jane Yolen, P.C. Hodgell, Michael de Larrabeiti, Joan D. Vinge, and Robin McKinley. These stories do not hesitate to plunge the reader into fully realized worlds, hence the title, "Imaginary Lands." I say "fully realized" because even in the short glimpses provided by the short story format, it is obvious that the authors have the entire pictures in their fertile minds. Each author hews closely to his or her own personal writing style, making it a pleasure to immerse oneself for the brief excursions into several different imaginations. My favorites of these were McKinley's, Dickinson's, and McKillip's, but they all are captivating in their own way. I know it's strange to say but this seems to me to be a winter read, preferably with a mug of hot chocolate. It's that quality of dreaminess that infuses all the tales, I suppose.
