If you grew up in the 70's or have the notion that you long to witness the beginnings of living an alternative life style, this book will comfort and inspire. Ms. Boylan layers with the obvious, ( growing up gay and ghost encountering) but also layers in the spirit of all coming of age stories which bear the stamp of pain, rejection, and longing. It's been awhile since a book captured so much nostalgia and relevance for me. Not a word is wasted. It should be required reading for all high school students.

Ghosts and living Ghosts
I adore Jenny Boylan, both because I'm from Maine and I love to see people have creative success out of the state, and because I think her story is really important.
I thought it was a great weaving of the ghosts that may have existed in her childhood house, and the ghost that she felt like living as a transgendered child.
I think this kind of story telling is extremely important when so many gay, lesbian, and transgendered people are being horribly discriminated against. If this book can help people see from their perspective, I think it is important to pass around. I have a friend in Nashville who was told by her family that

This book was amazing. Jennifer writes with such passion and the words really come from her soul. I didn't want to like it. I don't believe in ghost and I'm not sure what I think about transgenders. I think I have such a better understanding though of what it must be like to be in the wrong bodie. We all struggle with our demons. I'm so glad that she came to terms with her's and is living a rich and happy life. Thank you for sharing this with us.

Haunted Lives
As an entirely conventional and traditional person, I am astonished to find that I completely enjoyed this book. I've never seen a ghost, and I don't know how or why people change their gender, but there is much in this book that touches everyone. Issues of family, faith, love, death, first love, home, heartbreak and loss are all engaged in this beautifully written memoir. I am ashamed to say that I find transexuals frightening, sad, and repellant, but in reading Ms. Boylan's book, I find much common ground between us. Perhaps, all of us must deal, in different ways, with the uncertainties of life. Perhaps we are all, in some ways, outsiders finding our places in the world. This book is not, however, a heavy, philosophical tome. It is a funny and touching autobiography, written from a novel approach; growing up "haunted."
