If God is love . . . Why are so many Christians fearful? Why do so many Church leaders sound hateful? Why does religion often create more pain than healing? What would it take for our world to become more gracious? InIf Grace Is True, pastors Philip Gulley and James Mulholland revealed their belief that God will save every person. They now explore the implications of this belief and its power to change every area of our lives. They attempt to answer one question: If we took God's love seriously, what would our world look like? Gulley and Mulholland argue that what we believe is crucial and dramatically affects the way we live and interact in the world. Beliefs have power. The belief in a literal hell, where people suffer eternally, has often been used by the Church to justify hate and violence, which contradict what Jesus taught about love and grace. The authors present a new vision for our personal, religious, and corporate lives, exploring what our world would be like if we based our existence on the foundational truth that God loves every person. Gulley and Mulholland boldly address many controversial issues people in the pews have wondered about but churches have been unwilling to tackle. For too long, the , the Christian tradition has been steeped in negativity, exclusion, and judgment. Gulley and Mulholland usher us into a new era -- an age where grace and love are allowed to reign.

Seeking a new path
Gulley and Mulholland have taken an enthralling and radical path here, daring to cite their own experiences as conservative pastors in the Quaker faith, as they document their paths from evangelist to pluralist thinkers. In a world where all religion seems to be falling short in its attempt to answer the questions of war and violence and how to end them, these authors take a simple Quaker tennant: "answering that of God in everyone," and expand it to show how our Christian God of Love could not fail to unite everyone on earth.
The authors challenge us to see how the division of God into different faiths, sects and beliefs serves only to divide us into right and wrong, good and bad, and prevents meaningful discussion about what we have in common (desire for peace, desire to preserve our world).
This is not a new discussion, but the place it comes from may be. As Quaker pastors, the authors use their experience within their churches to demonstrate that God's love is present everywhere. Then they use good scholarship to expand this dialogue outward, to view how God's presence is transforming, if we loose our own bounds on seeing ourselves as more "right" than others in the world.
As a member of the Society of Friends who believes strongly in the peace testimony, I felt this book as a breath of fresh air and a support to my own beliefs. I believe it has meaning for many beyond the Religious Society of Friends, as it calls us to see a different way to enter the dialogue with other faiths and other countries. An exciting and challenging read!
