An interesting primer on the mystic basis of icons
The author had made a good service to the readers in providing a short but very readable introduction to the origin of mystical thinking in Christianity. This background is essential for anybody who wants to understand the symbolic language of orthodox icons.
The book is in two parts, the first reviews the history of mysticism with its roots in Hellenism, Judaism and the mysteries of Greece, Egypt and Babylon. The second analyses icons with the help of the insights gained in the first part. Well written even for those who do not accept every word as God given.
