Super Furry Animals's Ice Hockey Hair EP is another fun, cool group of songs from a band that can seemingly do no wrong. The four tracks here work as a bridge from the band's spaced-out rock style on Radiator to the pop/rock electronic experimentation found on Guerilla. Super Furry Animals's Ice Hockey Hair EP is another fun, cool group of songs from a band that can seemingly do no wrong. The four tracks here work as a bridge from the band's spaced-out rock style on Radiator to the pop/rock electronic experimentation found on Guerilla. "Smokin'" is a barn-storming song which wouldn't seem out of place on the soundtrack to a Guy Ritchie small-time-mobster movie. Goofy, wavering keyboards meet with fuzzy, crunching guitars over repeated chants of "I just wanna smoke it." It's a rollicking, singalong treat reminiscent of the band's output on Radiator and Fuzzy Logic. "Ice Hockey Hair" sees Gruff Rhys' distorted (via processing), flanged vocals alternating once again with the band's standard, trademark sound. "Mu-Tron" is relatively subdued and quite pretty. It's mostly instrumental until Rhys's peaceful vocals close the song. The track leads seamlessly into the sort of half-song reprise of "Smokin'" that is "Let's Quite Smoking," which continues the "I just wanna smoke it out" mantra. It would probably be best to say that the EP contains only three real songs, since "Mu-Tron" and "Let's Quit Smoking" subtly blend together and "Let's Quit Smoking" is just a lesser reprise of "Smokin'." The EP is another fine notch in the belt of a band that continues to prove they've got more and better pop/rock ideas than a hundred other bands combined. Still, one should collect the band's full-length albums before considering this EP because it is so short at 17 minutes and because Super Furry Animals' music works best in large doses of rop/rock gem upon pop/rock gem. ~ Tim DiGravina, Rovi
