I read this book before I brought home my puppy- the first dog I have ever owned. I learned a lot to dispel some incorrect advice I had already received from non-experts, for example, did you know you should never hit a dog? Hands are for affection, don't use them for punishment. The authors helped me understand how to housebreak my puppy in 6 days with only verbal praise, the importance of using a crate and doorway gate, and how to deal with some of the things I wouldn't have figured out on my own. The things about the book that I did not like were their constant reference to leaving the dog in a kitchen or laundry room where there is linoleum and nothing unsafe for the pup to chew on. Well...our house is all wood floors...no linoleum, no tile. There was no acknowledgement that such a house could exist, and no alternatives were suggested except to cover the entire floor with paper (what?!). I'm glad I did not have to worry about housebreaking for long and my puppy chose to eliminate on the rug which covers a portion of the wood floor, anyway. I'm glad I had a big bottle of Nature's Miracle. The book could have spoken more about proper dog nutrition. I have discovered it is not enough to choose a dog food that states that it is "complete and balanced." The authors also advise pouring liquid over dry food "to make it more palatable" which is bad advice because this can cause bloating in the dog's stomach (especially when citric acid is used as a preservative). The brands sold in grocery stores, even the ones that claim to be "premium" are generally not very good food, but the marketing campaigns would lead you to believe that they are. I advise dog owners to choose a food without corn, wheat, or soy and that do not use BHA, BHT, or ethoxyquin as a preservative. Some of the most popular brands have corn and sorghum in the first 4 ingredients! These are cheap fillers that offer no nutrition for your dog. The authors primary training tool is the "training collar," or, choke chain. We chose not to use this device on our puppy for training and have enlisted the advice of some other dog trainers and methods. A friend who used the advice in the Siegal/Margolis books did just fine with her dog but we decided a chain was not for us. In all, there is some good advice in this book about not becoming stressed when the puppy acts like a puppy, don't delay correction - you have to catch the dog IN the act, and you have to provide an adequate number of appropriate chew toys to distract the pup from chewing household items (or your hands!). There is good advice about selecting a puppy with a nice temperament and how to choose a good breeder (don't buy a puppy mill dog). This book can be part of a good library on puppy taining but I would not limit myself to just this one.
