So, I came to this remembering the heartbreaking obituary and letters in Down Beat magazine of 1972... (One McNair Taylor, who seemed to have a fascination with jazz trumpet players, wrote an eloquent tribute.) There is some beautiful imagery, and intriguing to hear Morgan's own voice as well as that of the woman (his common-law wife Helen (Moore) Morgan) who shot and killed him. Lots of good commentary by fellow jazz artists (Wayne Shorter, Bennie Maupin; Billy Harper; Jymie Merritt; Albert "Tootie" Heath, among many others)... I thought more could have been said about his work as a composer, because he was one of the best! The evidence is there, Morgan was a superb trumpet player. But as an improviser... well, he was excellent, but not in the same league with Clifford Brown, Miles, Dizzy... (At least to my ears...) Good documentary!
