Excerpt from Hymns Composed on Various Subjects: With the Author's Experience, the Supplement and Appendix As I had the happiness of being born of believ ing parents, I imbibed the sound doctrines of the gospel from my infancy; nor was 1 without touches of heart, checks of conscience, and melt ings of affections, by the secret strivings of God's Spirit with me while very young: but the im pressions were not deep, nor the in uences last lng, being frequently defaced and quenched by the vanities and vices of childhood and youth. About the twenty-first year of my age I began to be under great anxiety concerning my soul. The spirit of bondage distressed me sore though I endeavoured (asl believe most under legal con victions do) to commend myself to God's favm by amendment of life, virtuous resolutions, morn rectitude, and a strict attendance on religious ordinances. I strove to subdue my esh b fast ing, and other rigorous acts of penance an mor tification; and whenever I was captivated by it: lusts (which indeed was often the case) I endea voured to reconcile myself again to God by son row for my faults which, if attended with tears I hoped would pass as current coin with heaven and then I judged myself whole again, and tr stand on equal terms with my foes, till the nex fall, which generally succeeded in a short time.
