Frankly I found this book weird and unpleasant. I read it to my 2 kids after his first book, Moths and Fathers, which was nice. I am personally familiar with depression and it does not help with depression-- the book itself is depressing. Christians beware-- it not too subtly "diss-es" God. Some of his metaphors work, but they are never brought to a point that makes any sense. Surely Mr. Shles is not suggesting that the solution to childhood depression is to get close to an adult stranger pleading for a hug. I'm guessing he meant that helping others makes us feel better, but he does not make that at all clear to his audience, children.

This book is great for children
All of the books that I have read by Larry Shles are exceptional. I particularly like this book about Squib, the owl; he has a missing piece. Squib feels sad and blue. This is a wonderful way to start a discussion with children about depression. Children often experience this problem, just like Squib. What a great way to have the opportunity to talk about a subject that is so very difficult for young and old alike.
