I learnt a lot from this book, especially about the growth patterns of trees and their families. I had however expected a true encyclopedia of trees, whereas this book is primarily about the holarctic region, Europe, some of Asia, and N America. Eucalypts, of which there are around 700 species, get a mere three pages, whereas N American oaks, numbering some 80 species, get 6 pages. The text is discursive and very readable, but if you are looking for specific facts, this is not the best book for you.
