His Pastorale for oboe, harp and strings is certainly just as lyrical and evocative as his Serenade. And his Suite from his opera Merry Mount is certainly more disingenuous than moving and clearly more soupy than lyrical, but it's still well-written. Is Hanson's music good or bad? In this 1991 recording by Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony, it's usually at least diverting as long as it's going on, although sometimes it does go on and on and on.
