Some review comments on How to Write Anything: A Guide and Reference by John J. Ruszkiewicz, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Rhetoric and Writing College of Liberal Arts, University of Texas at Austin
This text has all of the elements necessary to effectively teach composition. Divided into two sections (guide and reference), it presents concentrated information and guidance for teaching and writing, not only in the traditional and established modes and genres, but also in practical, beyond-the-classroom type of assignments such as essay exams, e-mail, letters, reports, etc. The activities include guiding questions which encourage the development of higher-level thinking skills. A notable section, the ?Special Assignments? section makes this an ideal text for writing across disciplines. One outstanding chapter presents and outlines a remarkable approach to teaching style by discussing ?high, middle, and low? styles and offering information on refining tone. The section on writing instruction offers the following superb qualities:
? Easy-to read print
? Photos
? Mapping and outlining strategies
? Color coding
? Writing samples
? Prompts
? End of chapter assignments
? Cross referencing
? Library resources
The reference section covers a wide range of skills that students need for work in all stages of their writing as well as in various writing situations. In addition to the usual information found in a reference text, this work also provides a useful section on ?Media and Design.? This comprehensive section teaches students to think visually, to understand effective use of images, to develop PowerPoint slides, and to design print and on-line documents. All in all, I highly recommend this text.
Ruszkiewicz presents Aristotelian rhetorical principles in a hand-book format, making it easy for students to search, find, and follow dynamic prescriptions for writing, wherever they are in their wring process.. I highly recommend this book that I have personally chosen for an advanced English compositon course.
