How to Teach Thinking Skills Within the Common Core is a practical guide that prepares teachers to teach to the CCSS, across all grade levels and content areas. Authors James A. Bellanca, Robin J. Fogarty, and Brian M. Pete divide the book into seven key student proficiencies that encompass the desired thinking skills of the CCSS: (1) critical thinking, (2) creative thinking, (3) complex thinking, (4) comprehensive thinking, (5) collaborative thinking, (6) communicative thinking, and (7) cognitive transfer. Each proficiency focuses on three specific thinking skills prominent in the Common Core. The twenty-one applicable skills make the Common Core approachable for all teachers and students. Additionally, the authors provide a three-phase model for teaching each thinking skill. In phase I, the Talk-Through, educators teach the thinking skill explicitly. In phase II, the Walk-Through, teachers practice the thinking skill within content-based lessons, providing guidance to ensure the proper application of the skill.
