Pay commences at 219 per annum, and rises to 401. Chaplains are also allowed to act as Naval Instructors, in which case the pay commences at 328, and rises to G02, with 5 per annum for each pupil. After 20 years' service, retiring pensions of from 250 to 450 are granted. Widows receive a pension of from 50 to 80, and grants for young children. NAVAL INSTEUCTOES. Candidates must pass in Arithmetic, Algebra, Euclid (all), Trigonometry, Elementary Statics, Dynamics, Hydrostatics, Latin, French. After a period of instruction not exceeding nine months at the Eoyal Naval College at Greenwich, they are required to pass a satisfactory examination in Navigation and Nautical Astronomy, Nautical Surveying, practical use of instruments, Steam Engine, Meteorology, Physics. Pay commences at 219 and rises to 401. Naval Chaplains acting as Naval Instructors receive half of this rate of pay in addition to their own. THE MEECHANT SERVICE. Age from 13 to 20, but there is no fixed or legal limit of age. Mode Of Entry. 1. As Midshipmen. This is the most expensive mode of entering the service, but one which saves the youth from much hard and menial work, and secures for him kind and considerate treatment. The premium varies according to the size, etc., of the ship. It may be roughly stated at from 50 to 150 guineas. 2. First Class Apprentices serve for from three to five years.
